Oilers Young Guns Edged by Flames 5-4

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were edged out by the Calgary Flames 5-4 in a strange shoot out. The Flames started quickly scoring a goal in the first two minutes of the game. They then added another half way through the period when the Oilers goalie gave the puck away from behind the net. The Oilers began a push back at 13:15 when Leon Draisaitl received a pass in the left hand corner then passed it off to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. RNH then shot the puck toward the net. Taylor Hall was in front of the net to the left and deftly deflected the shot through the arm of the Calgary goaltender to cut the lead 2-1. But before the period ended Calgary added another to make it 3-1.

In the second period the Oilers looked to close the gap. At 10:38 the Young Guns were on a power play and moved into the Calgary zone. Hall was on the right side and passed it wide over to Teddy Purcell on the far left. Purcell then saw Brandon Davidson trailing on the play and moving over the blue line. He passed it over to Davidson who fired a rocket that blasted over the goalie in the top left corner to make the score 3-2. Once again the Flames struck before the end of the period to take another two goal lead and make it 4-2.

The Young Guns started the third period on a power play. The Oilers moved the puck around the Flames zone. Purcell had the puck on the left side and passed it to the middle to Leon Draisaitl who passed to the right to Taylor Hall. Hall made a cross rink pass back to Purcell far on the left hand side. Purcell then snapped a shot into the net before the Flames goal tender could get back across and the lead was cut 4-3. At 6:40 Draisaitl intercepted a pass in his zone and broke out passing up to Taylor Hall moving up on the right hand side. Hall brought the puck into the Flames zone as RNH cut through the middle in front of the net drawing attention. While Draisaitl cut up the middle and to the left. Hall spotted him and saucered a pass tape to tape as Draisaitl snapped the puck home to tie the game 4-4.

In the dying seconds of the third period the Young Oilers attempted to kill the clock to go in to overtime and preserve a point. But the Flames shot the puck into the Oilers zone. It was close to an off side but not called,. the puck went into the left corner and a Flame player fired a shot from behind the goal line. The puck somehow found its way through the pads of the Oilers goal tender and ended up in the net with only 8.7 seconds on the clock to finish the Oiers 5-4.

Oilers Young Guns Comeback against Habs, Priceless

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns completed a stunning comeback against the Montreal Canadiens erasing a three goal lead and snapping a three game loosing streak. Montreal got off to a blistering start scoring 3 goals in the first period to go up 3-0.

In the second period the two teams played cautiously with the Habs looking to sit on the lead for the rest of the game. But that plan backfired. In the last minute of the second period the Oilers were on a power play. At 19:08 the Oilers had the puck in the Habs zone and passed the puck around. RNH had the puck on the right hand circle and moved in. He stopped and passed the puck back to Oscar Klefbom at the blue line, who blasted a shot. The puck grazed Taylor Hall on the shoulder and flew over the net and bounced off the end boards. Leon Draisaitl shot the puck as it bounced back and deflected it off the blocker of Goalie Carey Price and it bounced into the air. The puck was on its way into the goal but a Montreal defenceman knocked it out of mid-air with his glove. The play went into review and it was found that the puck crossed the goal line to make the score 3-1.

In the third period the Young Guns continued to press the play. At 6:16 Connor McDavid rushed the puck out of his zone and carried it all the way into the Canadiens territory. He veered to the right but was hauled down by a Canadien defenceman. But McDavid quickly got up off the ice in the right hand corner and retrieved the loose puck. He passed it back to Darnell Nurse at the blue line. Nurse quickly lateraled the puck to Brandon Davidson on the left hand side. Davidson moved in and blasted a slap shot. The puck found the net near the left hand post and the Oilers cut the lead down 3-2.

At 10:43 Nail Yakupov pushed the puck out of his zone and bounced it off the boards to Connor McDavid on the right hand side. Just past the center line McDavid deftly lifted the stick of P.K. Subban allowing the puck to get past him. He then chipped a pass down the middle to Benoit Pouliot over the blue line. Pouliot was in all alone and snapped a shot passed the blocker side of the Habs goalie to complete the comeback and tie the score 3-3.

In the last few minutes of the third period at 18:58 the Oilers Young Guns retrieved the puck in their own zone. Taylor Hall brought the puck up the left hand side and shot the puck into the Montreal zone from the center line. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins cut in from the center and chased down a Montreal defenceman for the puck that was going around the left corner. Nugent-Hopkins slapped the stick of the defender and knocked the puck loose. He picked up the puck and circled the net looking for a pass. Taylor Hall was in front of the net on the right hand side acting as a decoy and taking the attention from Habs goalie Cary Price for a split second. Nugent-Hopkins spotted Leon Leon Draisaitl skating in down the middle and snapped a pass to him. Draisaitl received the pass in front of the net and let a wrist shot fly into the open left hand side of the net to give the Oilers a 4-3. lead. The Oil went on to win and leave Price less a victory.

 

Oilers Young Guns Fall Short in Wild Comeback

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns lost 4-3 to the Minnesota Wild when their comeback came up short. In the first period the Wild scored two quick goals half way through the period. At 11:09 Conner McDavid drew a penalty on the Wild and hustled to the Wild zone with a delayed penalty. He retrieved the puck on the right hand half boards and cut to the net on the right hand side at an angle. He stick handled the puck drawing the defense and passed off to Yakupov in the slot. Yakupov shot toward the net and the Wild goalie had it deflect off his blocker. Taylor Hall was at the left hand side of the net and shot the loose puck in to cut the score 2-1.

In the second period at 4:41 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins gained the line on a turnover into the Wild zone. He shot the puck around the right hand corner. Taylor Hall pursued and stole the puck behind the Wild net. He then cut back in the left hand corner and centered the puck to Iiro Pakarinen cutting in from the top. Pakarinen then snapped a shot that double deflected off a Wild defender and shot over the blocker of the Wild goalie to tie up the score 2-2.

In the third period at 3:38 Oscar Klefbom in his defensive zone moved the puck over to Darnell Nurse. Nurse then went up the middle of the ice zig zagging until he got into the Wild zone. He then let a shot fly just passed the blue line. A wild defender had the puck slightly deflect off his stick and the puck rocketed high over the glove of the Wild goalie to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead and Nurse’s first NHL goal.

But the lead was short lived as Minnesota tied the score about half way through the period. Then on a weak defensive play by the Oilers, the Wild got the puck into the Oilers zone and scored to take make it 4-3. The Young Guns pushed to tie the score but time ran out as they could not nurse their lead.

Oilers Young Guns Royally Robbed by Kings

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were edged 3-2 when the Los Angeles Kings won on a last second disputed goal that did not count for the Oil. But it was the Young Guns who drew first blood at 4:42 of the first period Nail Yakupov brought the puck out of his zone on the left hand side and passed it over to Conner McDavid breaking through the Neutral zone on the right hand side. McDavid with blazing speed on the right wing got passed an L.A. defender and avoided his stick from being tied up, suddely he snapped a shot off the goalie in tight. The rebound bounced off the L.A. goalies pad back up the middle where Benoit Pouliot picked up the rebound and snapped a shot passed the goalies glove hand side to make it 1-0. Later in the first period the Kings tied the score 1-1.

In the second period the Kings leaned heavily on the Young Guns and controlled most of the play. Anze Kopitar scored half way through the period to make it 2-1.

In the third period the Oilers pushed back and held their own. At 13:56 the Oilers were on a power play. Ryan Nugent Hopkins had the puck at the right half boards and passed it back to Oscar Klefbom at the blue line. Klefbom moved to the middle then passed the puck back to Nugent-Hopkins. RNH then snapped a pass to Taylor Hall who was high in the slot. Hall then deflected the puck high on the stick hand side of the goalie to make it 2-2. But two minutes later the Kings struck back on a power play to go up 3-2.

In the dying seconds of the game the Oilers Young Guns pulled out all the stops as well as their goalie to go 6 on 5. Yakupov had the puck on the right side of the net and sent a shot through the crease but it went wide. The Oilers recovered the puck and sent it to the net once again. Conner McDavid was on the far right hand post and fought to keep his stick from being tied up. He saw the puck and quickly shot it to the open net with 4 seconds remaining. The L.A. goalie dove for the puck and covered it up with his glove just as it went over the line. The referee could not see the puck and waved the goal off and replays were inconclusive so the goal could not be confirmed. Still pictures at another angle clearly showed the puck crossing the line but it was not to be. The Young Guns were Royally robbed and went down 3-2.

Oilers Young Guns Whipped by Washington

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were whipped 7-4 by the Washington Capitals to put their record to 3-5. The defense broke down immediately when the Caps scored their first goal early in the first period. At 10:59 the Oilers responded when Conner McDavid broke into the Caps zone on the right side and made a saucer pass to Nail Yakupov who was unable to score at the side of the net. But Yak retrieved the puck and passed in the slot to Bonoit Pouliot who snapped a shot high over the Caps goaltender to tie the score 1-1.

A few minutes later the Oiler defense broke down when the Caps sliced in to score their second goal. The Oilers once again responded at 15:00 when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins brought the puck into the Caps zone and passed it off the Taylor Hall. Hall cut through the middle and fired a shot that was blocked. He picked up the loose puck and fired it at the net. Rob Klinkhammer was in front of the net to deflect in the shot and tie the game 2-2. But late in the period the caps struck once again to take the lead 3-2.

The Oilers Young Guns got a powerplay early in the second period. At :36 Mark Letestu won a draw on the face off in the Caps zone. Andrej Sekera then had the puck and moved to the center near the blue line and passed it back to McDavid on the right side. McDavid moved in looking for a backdoor pass and shot it toward the front. Pouliot provided a screen at the front of the net when the puck deflected in off a Caps defender to give McDavid his 5th goal of the season and a 3-3 tie.

But the wheels fell of the Oilers as one bad play led to another allowing the Capital three goals in a row to make it 6-3. Washington made swiss cheese out of Oilers goalie Nilsson as he allowed six goals in seventeen shots and was replaced by Talbot. At 14:42 the Oilers tried to push back when Anton Slepyshev moved the puck up to Nugent-Hopkins who drove up the right hand side. He attempted to pass the puck to Hall breaking in on the left hand side. The puck bounced back to Nugent-Hopkins who quickly picked up the puck and snapped a shot high over the goal tenders shoulder to make it 6-4.

But all was for naught as the Caps added another goal in the third period to end the game 7-4 in a wild shootout.

Oilers Young Guns Exorcise Detroit Demons in 3-1 Win

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns finally defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 for the first time in regulation in six years, and the first time at home in nine years. This also gave them a three game winning streak.

In the first period at 12:32 on a power play Justin Schultz passed the puck up to Nail Yakupov on the right hand side. Yakapov brought the puck in over the blue line and skated backwards into the right hand corner. He spotted Mark Letestu in the slot as three Red Wings converged on him. He snapped a pass and Letestu shot the puck off the heal of his stick, bounced off  his skate and into the Detroit goal to make it 1-0.

In the second period at 6:34 Nail Yakupov received the puck in his own zone along the right wall and bounced the puck off the boards as the Oilers broke out of their zone. Benoit Pouliot picked up the puck in the neutral zone and brought it in the Red Wing zone. While in the neutral zone Connor McDavid held off a check from Brad Richards in order not to go off side. McDavid then sprang forward into the Red Wing zone with no one in front of him and received a pass from Pouliot. McDavid then faked to the right, sending the goalie in that direction and brought the puck back to his left and shot the puck in for his first NHL goal at home and gave the Oil a 2-0 lead.

Later in the second period at 7:04 Mark Fayne bounced the puck off the boards to clear the Oilers zone. Lauri Korpikoski then brought the puck up through the neutral zone creating a two on one. After gaining the zone he passed the puck off to Teddy Purcell who was in all alone, he snapped the shot off the Detroit goal tender and the rebound bounced out and deflected off a pursuing Red Wing defender into the goal, padding the Oilers lead 3-0.

The Wings scored in the third period cutting the lead 3-1. But another stellar performance by Oilers goal tender Cam Talbot kept the door shut for the rest of the game to preserve the victory.

 

Oilers Young Guns Crown Canucks 2-1 in OT

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns knocked off the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 in overtime to win 2 games in a row. The Oilers drew a penalty early in the first period. At 3:23 Mark Letestu moved the puck over to Conner McDavid in the neutral zone. McDavid brought it over the Canucks blue line and bounced it off the left half boards back to himself. He moved to the left corner and spotted Nail Yakupov in the slot and passed it to him. Yakupov got a good snap shot to beat Canucks goalie Ryan Miller on the right hand side to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead.

Later in the first period Vancouver tied the score 1-1. The teams then went scoreless for the next two periods. Oilers goalie Anders Nilsson played superb stopping several quality shots. He was lucky when the Sedin twins came in on a break. Henrik Sedin shot the puck and the rebound was in front of the net for an easy tap in. But Daniel Sedin chipped the puck over the net on a point blank shot to keep the game tied.

In overtime the teams traded chances 3 on 3. At 1:46 the Canucks had the puck in the Oilers zone when Andrej Sekera checked Henrik Sedin to the boards and took the puck. He skated up the right hand side through the neutral zone and over the Canuck blue line on a two on one break. He saucered a beautiful back hand pass on to the stick of Lauri Korpikoski going down the middle. Korpikoski was all alone and fired a shot that squeaked through the pads of Goalie Ryan Miller to give the Oil a 2-1 OT win and snap Miller’s 12 game winning streak against the Oilers.

Oilers Young Guns Devastate Flames in Battle of Alberta

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns destroyed the Calgary Flames 5-2 to win their first game of the 2015-16 season and are now 1-4. Each of the Oilers number 1 overall draft picks scored with Nuggent-Hopkins, Hall and Yakupov each scoring a goal and McDavid scoring two goals. McDavid also notched his first NHL assist.

The Battle of Alberta started in earnest but it was the Young Guns that struck first. At 12:59 of the first period Hendricks gained the zone on the right hand side and dropped the puck off to Taylor Hall. Hall moved to the middle and passed the puck over to Eric Gryba who fired the puck from the left point. The Calgary goalie stopped the shot as it rebounded to the right side. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins floating in on the right was there to bang in the rebound to the middle of the net and make the score 1-0.

In the first part of the second period Calgary struck to tie the score 1-1. Then at 16:31Nail Yakupov picked up the puck in his own zone and quickly passed it up to Conner McDavid clearing the zone on the right hand side. McDavid sped through the Neutral zone into Calgary territory. He drove in on the right hand side and snapped a shot under the arm of the Calgary goaltender to put up the Young Oil 2-1.

Early in the third period at :25 the Oilers took a face off in the Calgary zone on the right hand side. Matt Hendricks took the face off and drew it back. Oscar Klefbom picked up the puck and brought it to the right hand corner, he passed it to the front of the net where Taylor Hall deflected it to the goalie and quickly shot the rebound through the five hole of the Calgary goal tender to make it 3-1.

At 2:59 of the third period Benoit Pouliot fought for the puck at the back of the Calgary net and centered it to Conner McDavid on the left hand side. McDavid spotted Yakupov in front of the net on the right hand side and quickly passed it over. Yakupov then shot the puck home to make it 4-1. The Flames cut the lead 4-2 a few minutes later.

At 16:20 on a power play Nugent-Hopkins battled for the puck on the right corner, he kicked the puck over to Andrej Sekera along the boards. Sekera then passed it down to Hall. Hall moved to the net on the right hand side and spotted McDavid back door in front of the net. Hall saucered a pass over to McDavid who snapped the puck in to complete the scoring 5-2.

McDavid Scores First NHL Goal in 4-2 Loss to the Stars

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns Conner McDavid scored his first NHL goal at 10:55 of the second period but lost to the Dallas Stars 4-2, as they were outshot 52-28. Oilers goaltender Anders Nilsson played stellar in goal but was unable to stem the tide as the Oilers lose their first three games of the season.

In the second period McDavid circled from the left half boards toward the center when Andrej Sekera shot from the blue line. McDavid spotted the puck and deftly tipped it in past the Dallas goaltenders glove to notch his first goal and give the Oilers a 2-2 tie.
